Paulette Hamilton Labour MP for Birmingham Erdington
Consecutive Conservative governments have been slashing police budgets since 2010, resulting in the loss of 20,000 officers across England and Wales. This has had a devastating effect on local policing and community safety, especially in areas like ours in Erdington, Kingstanding and Castle Vale.
These areas have seen a rise in violent crime, burglary, shoplifting, and other offences, as well as a decline in detection and charge rates. Many residents feel abandoned, as they struggle to get a response from overstretched and under-resourced officers. The elderly, the disabled, and the vulnerable are particularly at risk, as they rely on the police for protection and support.
The Tory cuts to policing were reckless and short-sighted, as they have undermined public confidence and trust in the police. We need a government that will invest in our police and restore their numbers, powers, and morale. We need a Labour government that will make our communities safer and stronger, not weaker and more divided.
