Exempt accommodation can have a significant impact on local communities, residents and the availability of family housing.
I have launched a petition calling on the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to strengthen the implementation of reforms under the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act 2023 and related planning regulations.
The petition calls on the Government to:
- Require planning permission for exempt accommodation schemes.
- Ensure neighbouring residents are consulted before schemes are approved.
- Enable councils to consider local concentration levels and community impacts when assessing new schemes.
- Allow exempt accommodation to be considered alongside existing HMO planning policies where appropriate.
- Give local authorities stronger powers to manage new schemes in areas with high concentrations of exempt accommodation.
